Overview
The client is an established technical engineering company with over 200 employees based in Hamburg Germany. Specialist IT tools are crucial for successful operation, efficiency, and reliability. System security and integrity is essential.
After careful investigation Dyonix redesigned and replaced an under performing foundational IT infrastructure with a modern, high performance solution. This unlocked significant gains in productivity, reliability, stability, security and future proofing, underpinned with simplified cost-efficient operation.
The Challenge
The customer reported significant operational issues with their legacy VMware system, which increasingly struggled under high-load conditions from resource hungry applications. Data security was a growing concern, with system backups and data restores delaying operations, whilst adding unnecessary pressure to already tight deadlines.
Facing delays staff started taking things into their own hands, manually copying and synchronising data via their workstations instead of working centrally, whilst simultaneously introducing potentially serious data security issues. Productivity was hit hard with many manual steps involved in copying and re-synchronising multi-gigabyte project files.
The rapidly evolving yet largely hidden crisis silently contributed to weakening business opportunities, making the need for a robust, performance orientated, integrated and resilient IT system an “immediate priority”.
System Analysis and Proposed Solution
Our investigations identified and reported all major operational issues, liabilities, and overheads including unfavourable contractual terms for the existing VMware. Our recommendation was not to simply replace the old system with an updated equivalent; it was about the cost-effective transformation and integration of the entire company IT infrastructure.
Our system is based on “Hyper-V with GPU acceleration”. Hyperconverged design redefines traditional topology of storage and compute into a single unified unit, defined purely via software tools. This design eliminates crucial bottlenecks in storage and networking stacks, delivering consistent and sustainable high-performance results, essential for growing workloads.
Having made our assessment we submitted a comprehensive fully costed offer, enabling a confident, informed decision. This approach ensured the client felt secure in their choice, viewing our proposal not just as a cost, but as an opportunity for growth and strategic partnership.
Benefits
Potentially offering up to 25% savings over competitors we utilised commodity hardware and leveraged the built-in features of Hyper-V, in Microsoft Windows Server. We defined all aspects of the new system including: Networking, Storage, Computing and Software. Whilst eliminating the need for “Specialist Vendor Lock-in” essentially freeing the company from ongoing supplementary costs to unlock features.
The new system delivers impressive flexibility while generating direct operational savings. Expansion and upgrades can now be performed without impacting existing workloads,. Traditional systems are usually upgraded through “rip-out and replace” measures, leading to significant disruption and downtime.
Reduced complexity and conducting operations within a familiar Windows based environment means reduced training requirements for IT staff. Updated software releases are available immediately, ensuring rapid upgrades with ease. Ongoing maintenance has become straightforward, without a need for training on multiple vendor specific configurations and procedures.
Streamlined IT operations translates directly into efficient time management and lower operational costs.
Seamless Migration
Migrating the existing virtual environment from VMware to Hyper-V was accomplished with a process refined and streamlined through many migrations of this type. We seamlessly transferred workloads to the new environment without data loss, incurring minimal downtime and without disruption to operations running alongside production systems.
For the end user, everything remained the same familiar environment, but with an immediate and noticeable boost in system responsiveness and stability.
With all workloads safely migrated to the new Hyper-V infrastructure, the legacy VMware system was quickly removed from production and scheduled for complete decommissioning.
Conclusion
This case study clearly demonstrates the strategic significance and wide ranging advantages for the adoption of modern Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI).
