What makes La Réunion stand out in the Africa region?
La Réunion sits at the crossroads of the Indian Ocean, roughly 1,100 km east of Madagascar and 230 km south-east of Mauritius. The island is served by three modern submarine cables – SAFE, LION/LION 2, and METISS – that connect it to the African mainland through Cape Town, Durban, and Mombassa, and to Asia via India and Singapore. Round‑trip latency from the island to major data centres is roughly 55 ms to South Africa, 80 ms to Singapore, and 180 ms to Europe, making it an ideal alternative hosting site in Africa that also delivers excellent international connectivity
Opened in 2024, the new Oméga 1 datacentre in Port de Sainte‑Marie – a Tier‑3‑equivalent facility that can host up to 120 racks and targets a PUE of 1.38 thanks to a roof‑mounted photovoltaic array and green‑spaces – strong renewable penetration, stringent EU data‑protection (GDPR) compliance, and a highly skilled local workforce, positions La Réunion as a strategic hub for hosting, edge‑caching, and disaster‑recovery scenarios across the African region

Round‑trip latency is approximately ~55 ms to South Africa, ~80 ms to Singapore and ~180 ms to Europe. Actual latency depends on the route that is being used and can vary, depending on network load and other external factors.
